Newark Parcel Survey

Summary

The Newark Mapping Project (formerly the South Ward Mapping Project), sponsored by Strong Healthy Communities Initiative (SHCI), aims to survey and map the physical environment of three South and West Ward neighborhoods, in order to document conditions that impact resident quality of life.

To complete this project, SHCI has trained and certified over 25 Newark residents as Community Surveyors from September 2014 – September 2015. These individuals have been paid to use innovative technology to document the use and condition of every property in the Upper Clinton Hill and Lower Clinton Hill sections of Newark’s South Ward, as well as the Fairmount section of the West Ward. Over 8,500 parcels were surveyed in the South Ward in 2014, including vacant lots, single-family houses, multi-family structures, apartment buildings, mixed use properties, factories and warehouses, and commercial and institutional facilities. In 2015, approximately 3,000 additional parcels are being surveyed in the West Ward. SHCI is using web-based software produced by LocalData.com to track survey results in real-time, allowing local stakeholders to see parcel-level data as it is collected and is sharing these results with the public.

Goals

By using community members to document conditions that impact resident quality of life and sharing results with decision makers and the public, this project will 1) expand the availability of neighborhood-level data to improve public programs and 2) build better, more transparent and democratic data practices in Newark.
